4 Types of Fish Categories
By Chris Mills
If you have ever visited a local fish store (LFS), you may have noticed that certain kinds of fish are put together under specific categories. The 4 basic categories are as follows: goldfish, cichlids, saltwater, and community. We will discuss each category and some things that maybe you weren't aware of. A hug amount of people like the saltwater fish category. Why? Because they are beautiful and there are a lot to choose from. However, they can be difficult to take care of so beginners should setup an aquarium using saltwater fish unless you are absolutely sure you can take care of these very sensitive creatures. Oftentimes, people will keep corals and anemones in their tank along with their saltwater fish. This however requires different lighting and chemicals. So if you are a newbie then you may want to start with a simple freshwater tank. This brings us to the goldfish group. These are very hardy fish not affected by extremes in temperature or water conditions. Believe it or not, these types of fish can survive even without a heater and what's nice is they usually get along with one another! What is a downside of keeping goldfish? Their waste is a huge downside. They can produce so much waste that they can kill other tank creatures from the ammonia that they produce. So you probably want to keep them in a tank by themselves, unless you a have a massive tank and you do regular water changes. That's why most people keep large amounts of goldfish in a pond. Beginners should probably start out with taking care of freshwater schooling fish. These types of fish are small, hardy, and peaceful. They won't cost you an arm and a leg, and you can create a well established tank just by having a properly sized filter and a heater. Let's now discuss cichlids. Much like saltwater fish, these fish are awesome, but they also can be very aggressive, especially if kept with other fish that are not cichlids. And when it is time to spawn, they can and will become very violent, even toward each other. Even though this is all true, they still remain very popular among aquarists. Large adult cichlids will normally dominate a territory inside the aquarium, and smaller cichlids will stay in their own section of the aquarium keeping their distance from the larger adult cichlids. It is highly recommended that you watch and make sure that the bigger ones are not picking on the smaller ones. If you don't they will kill the smaller cichlids. Read up on any of these types of categories that you want you are interested. But you will want to do this before you buy any fish so that you will know how to care for them properly. Do not wait until after you buy your fish. Learn the characteristics of the fish you are considering. For example, determine how big each of them will become, and what they will need when it comes to water chemistry and food. If you do this, you will be successful and your fish will be happy!
